Stephen Greenblatt tries to clear his claim that Shylock was originally played with the red beard and the hooked nose by citing as justification the ballad published by Thomas Jordan some seventy years after Shakespeares play was initial performed [Shylock in Red?, Letters, NYR, October 14].
