Who's Afraid of the Palestinians?

Hussein Agha as well as Robert Malley

Benjamin Netanyahu; sketch by John Springs

Without resolving the dispute with the Palestinians, Israel has for the moment resolved the Palestinian problem. Israels anxiety may be growing, but what it worries about no longer derives from the Palestinians. If in the eyes of most Arabs, Israel acts as if it were on top of the law, in the eyes of the own Jewish citizens it is treated with colour as if it were perpetually on probation. The dispute Israelis have come to caring about is not with the Palestinians; it is with the rest of the world. The understanding which interests Israel is one which would result in the thespian change in the condition which usually non-Palestinian actors can produce.
